Work from Home? No one believes it

Basically I get a handful of reactions when I mention I work from home.

1. They assume I sell Avon.
2. They think I’m lying about my income.
3. They assume I play on a computer all day.
4. If I don’t sell Avon, I must be doing one of those pyramid schemes.

In the age of internet and smart phones, why is it such an impossible assumption that I can actually make a money from my living room?

I’m griping. ;) But I’ve spend a few minutes out of my time to explain to someone (on another forum) how to work from home, the person who had asked said thank you and then another person comes in saying, “Thank her for what? For lying about how much you can make online?” I’ve already told him off, but my point being is I can’t believe people assume we’re sitting around making pennies or whatever.

And this isn’t to dis anyone who sells Avon and for those who do just make pocket money because that’s all you want.

I know this is just the kind of crud we all have to deal with from time to time. It just irked me. ;) Catherine M

I know what you mean. My friends still finds it hard to believe that I can actually live off of the way I do by what I make online, and I’ve been doing it for a good few years now. Occasionally they still ask things like “Are you still doing your online thing?” Well, hmmmm, did all my bills magically disappear? I always wonder how they think these get paid.

It can take a while for family and friends to understand. I get calls in the day asking to favours like driving to the airport to pick someone and all sorts.  A friend called me to see if I could go for this pickup. It annoyed me that she thought I could just drop what I was doing on such short notice and basically forfeit a day’s work. I did end up going since she kept bugging me to help, but I had to drill it into her head that I needed to earn money just like everyone else and I am not available at last minute.

97% of society is all based on working outside the home. It’s what you’re taught when you grow up – get a job. And no one tells you to work inside the home.

I’ve more than quadrupled my income since I left the work world, but no one takes my work seriously except my immediate family, and even that took a long time. When my brother-in-law & his wife were having difficulty finding childcare, everyone just assumed that I’d step in and babysit since “you’re home all day anyway, right?” — um, no. I work anywhere from 8 solid hours (no lunch, breaks, etc.) on a GOOD day to 12+ hours on a normal day, and I can’t possibly chase a toddler around and get my work done. My friend, sweet though she is, still doesn’t really understand that she can’t just drop by in the middle of the day to chit chat for an hour, or that I can’t drop everything to go shopping with her — I really AM working, harder than I ever did in an office!

And on the flipside of that, I have people who do believe me ask me to get them a job, which is kind of insulting, actually; the work I do is not unskilled labour, and it’s not something that just any random person could do and be good at. I don’t mind pointing people towards other work-at-home resources, but I can’t just snap my fingers and materialise a job for them, and I don’t have time to hold anyone’s hand through the process.

Oops! I didn’t mean for that to turn into such a rant. ;)

I actually cringe a bit when someone asks me what I do. I just say I am an internet marketer and I hope they don’t ask me what that means. Getting into the whole thing just annoys me because I don’t need 101 questions about what I do. I think my hubby is the only one who realises that I am actually here making MONEY, not just sitting around on my butt. My friends are always calling/stopping by during the day and just assumes that I can drop everything and leave. Same with my friends. Girl. I still WORK, I just do it from a different location. So irritating!

But you just get over it and forget about everyone else. You are in this for yourself and your family so none of these other people really matter. People need to see you driving a Range Rover to really believe you have made it, but if you aren’t one who likes showing off or buying the latest mod con they make assumptions about how you are doing.
